Listen, do you Hear?
Mother held a seashell up, close against my ear,
and speaking to me softly, said: Listen, do you Hear?
Do you hear the mermaids sing on beaches far away,
can you hear the waves that crash in seas where night is day?
Try to feel the salty tang of spray against your cheek,
and understand the words of whales who rumble when they speak.
Listen to the ocean winds that fill ship sails and blow--
away, away the wooden ships that sailed so long ago.
Yes, all this and more do hear, I answered with wide eyes,
I hear distant dolphins play 'neath sea-blue southern skies.
And something else surrounds it all, a song that shakes the deep:
Ah, she said, t'is but the King who soothes all Seas to sleep.
