see you

this morning, I stood staring blind

into the eyes of the man shaving

across the bathroom countertop

from me

and for the life of me, I couldn’t

quite remember who he was, his name

or even if he was a friend

of mine

that man, he shyly smiled at me

as if he, too, were a bit confused;

his puzzled face stared out into

my own

at last, as I just shook my head,

turned away to start the day anew,

a whisper soft behind me said

see you’
