this bird has flown

I lie awake alone

and await your call

I’m staring at the phone

and feeling small

I wonder where you are

in whose company

and why you choose a bar

instead of me

you tell me that you’re mine

and that I’m the one

that love you can’t define

has come undone

I’m starting to regret

all the words I’ve said

it’s harder to forget

here in my bed

I’d like to say I know

when sweet words are true

that I learned long ago

of men like you

but I’m susceptible

to the whispered word

need too detectable

to go unheard

so I wait here sleepless

by the telephone

knowing from its silence

this bird has flown
